How to Write an Effective Fan Letter
A lot of fan letters end up in the trash without getting a response because of poor scripting and penmanship! While most celebrities try to answer personally as many letters as possible, their schedule often precludes responding to all the letters they receive. Certain principles, rules and tips will improve your chances of getting a favorable response and are discussed under the following headings.
Preliminaries
You need to get the right address for the celebrity because a wrongly addressed letter is of no use and purpose. Celebrity websites and blogs, fan sites and blogs, labels, agents, team sites and publishers are some of the sources of retrieving a celebrity’s address. You should also carry out sufficient research to uncover as much information as possible about the celebrity. This will lend more weight to your letter, improving the chances of getting a relatively quick reply.
Introduction
The first thing to include is your address especially if you want the celebrity to send a reply. If you don’t want a reply, you can omit this. Since the celebrity doesn’t know who you are, you need to give a brief introduction about yourself. You can just state your name, age, location and/or occupation and the reason for the letter. Your introduction should be straight to the point and be as brief as possible.
Body and Conclusion
The body of the letter is the main hook for getting the celebrity’s interest. Following the introduction, you should mention the celebrity’s work and career, how much you admire it and the impact it has had on you. This is where the research done earlier pays off. Talking accurately about the celebrity’s work shows that you are interested and up-to-date about them and this is a good way of getting them interested in the letter. Ideally, try not to mention a lot of personal stuffs. After all, it’s about their work or public life and not their privacy; celebrities are also entitled to their privacy, contrary to what is generally expected.
You can also mention how their work helped you through a particularly trying period in your life, e.g., getting over an illness or getting through the loss of a spouse. The next thing is making your request known (a reasonable one!). Examples include a question about a view expressed about a celebrity and request for an autographed picture or poster. Round off your letter by thanking the celebrity for taking the time to read your letter and that you look forward and will really appreciate a response from them. Also wish them success in their future endeavors. Sign off the letter.
Put the letter in an envelope addressed to the celebrity. If you want an autographed photo, it’s a good idea to include a picture of the celebrity in the letter and a self addressed and stamped envelope with the correct postage stamps to facilitate the celebrity’s reply. Post the letter and move on with your life. The reply will come when it will with no further effort required on your part!
